Tattoos have become a popular form of body art

For hundreds of years, tattooing has been one of the main ways of self-expression, expression of status in society, a showcase of one’s history and experience, or cultural and artistic interest. Even nowadays tattoos are the main media of body art across the world’s cultures, achieving mainstream status.

Tattoos are finally being recognized as a form of self-expression, and design styles have expanded from American traditional tattoos to custom Japanese sleeves, to full body works of elaborate art that could tempt even those wariest of the machine into getting tattooed.

More Woman Than Men Have Tattoos in America

More than 145 million Americans alone have tattoos. At least 35% of people have one tattoo, and approximately 20% of people have two tattoos. Approximately 9% of people have more than 6 tattoos. As the number of tattoos increases, the number of people who have them decreases; that is generally the trend.

As crazy as it might sound, women are bigger fans of tattoos than men. A poll conducted by the TV series Best Ink and Lightspeed Research found that 59% of women have tattoos compared to 41% of men. The poll also found that 40% of women got their tattoo with someone else and that they make the process of getting inked more seriously than men.

“Women have a tendency sometimes of getting that little souvenir keepsake tattoo with deeper meaning, whereas men tend to go a little overboard and fill themselves up with larger pieces,” said Joe Capobianco, a 20-year tattoo artist who is also the head judge on Best Ink.

Americans Spend $1.65 Billion on Tattoos Yearly

Americans love getting ink. Compare Camp did some research into tattoos and the art of tattooing and found that Americans spend a whopping $1.65 million a year getting their body tattooed. That is an unbelievable amount of cash. They also discovered that 27% of Americans are willing to pay up to $100 for their tattoos. It was also pointed out that 6% are happy to fork out $2,500. The bottom line is Americans really like getting inked.

Are There Health Benefits to Getting a Tattoo?

Tattoos have a social stigma surrounding them, and even in 2018, people are judged for the marks they choose to leave on their skin. Everyone has an opinion on tattoos, but at the end of the day, the only opinion that should matter is that of the individual who has chosen to ink their body.

A  benefit of a tattoo could be down to the fact that the process creates an endorphin release.

Physical health benefits aside, the mental health benefits could be that tattoos can be a release or a way to channel emotion. Many tattoos have significant meaning for the person who chose to ink them, and it’s a form of self-expression.

According to CrowdHNews, for some, a tattoo can be therapeutic and calming. And ATTN: reports that the co-owner of a tattoo studio, Joanne Martian, says there is a mental aspect involved in getting a tattoo. She revealed, "I think a lot of mental stamina needs to be accounted for since mind over matter is usually what helps get you through long sessions…”
