Low Testosterone Causes Depression and Sexual Dysfunction

Low Testosterone And Sexual Problems

Low Testosterone In Men

Testosterone is a hormone produced by the testicles. It is responsible for the development of masculine characteristics such as muscle mass, bone density, and sexual desire.

Low testosterone levels in men are caused by a variety of factors. Some of them are genetic, while others are environmental. Low testosterone levels may be caused by certain diseases as well.

For example, hypogonadism is a condition where there is an insufficient amount of testosterone in the body. Hypogonadism usually occurs due to damage to the pituitary gland which produces hormones that regulate gonadal function.

Hormone deficiency is an ailment where men’s testicles and women’s ovaries produce few or no sex hormones.

Low testosterone levels can cause erectile dysfunction, which affects both men and women. It can also affect the way people look and feel, so they may lose their desire for sexual activity.

Symptoms of low testosterone

Here are some common signs and symptoms of having too little testosterone.
Reduced muscle mass

Testosterone helps develop muscle mass, and low levels of testosterone may cause a significant loss of muscle.

Low Testosterone levels cause muscle loss but don't affect muscle function or strength.

Reduced bone mass

Testosterone plays an important role in producing bone tissue and maintaining bone volume. A low level of testosterone may cause a decrease in these volumes, making the bones more prone to fractures.

Reduced sex drive

Low levels of testosterone may cause people to lose interest in having sex.

As men get older, their sex drives tend to diminish naturally. However, if the cause is low testosterone levels, they may notice a significant drop in their sexual desires.
An increase in energy levels

If low testosterone leads to decreased energy and fatigue, then it may be caused by something else.

Someone might feel exhausted, even after enough sleep, or become less interested in physical activity.

An increase in body weight

Testosterone levels can be reduced by eating less meat.

Some men who lack testosterone may experience breast development due to a hormonal imbalance.

Hair loss

Hair loss is often a normal part of aging, but some types of hair loss can be related to an underlying medical condition.

A 2018 study found that testosterone implants helped support hair regrowth in some female patients who were experiencing symptoms of low levels of estrogen.

Low Testosterone And Sexual Problems

Problems with erections

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) occurs when the penis becomes unable to become hard enough for sexual intercourse. It’s caused by an imbalance in blood flow into and out of the penis. Some factors that contribute to ED include stress, anxiety, depression, certain medications, poor circulation, smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Testosterone stimulates the penis tissues to produce nitric acid, which starts several reactions resulting in an erection. If testosterone levels are too low, a person may not be able to achieve an erection.

There are several things that can cause erectile dysfunction including:
  • smoking
  • thyroid-related issues
  • high cholesterol
  • stress or anxiety
  • alcohol consumption
  • diabetes
  • high blood pressure

Studies show that testosterone supplementation may be effective for men who suffer from mild erectile dysfunction.
